Arthus-Like Reaction Produced Tay Mixture of Antigen-Anti ody Complexes and Serotonin

Abstract
The author studied, using antigen-antibody complexes, the action of serotonin as a chemical mediator in tissue in;ury in rabbits_ The variols mixtures were prepared by adding serotonin to each of the following substances, namely insoluble antigen-antibody complexes, supernatant, egg albumin solution, anti-egg albumin rabbit serum and the plasma or serum of normal, rabbit.
Each mixture was injected intradermally into the abdominal skin of normal rabbits and the local reaction was observed grossly at time intervals for 4 hours.
Microscopic studies were carried out only in the cases in which the skin reactions was intense. The results through this study are summarized as follows:
T. The mixture of insoluble antigen-antibody complexes and scrotonin produced Arthus-like reation, while
antigen-antibody complexes or serotonin alone did not produce any significant lesion.
2. The mixture of supernatant and serotonin produced mild swelling at the site of injection while super
natant alone did not produce any significant lesion.
3. The mixture of egg albumin and serotonin produced mild hyperemia and swelling, while the egg albumin alone did not produced any significant lesion.
4. The mixture of the anti-egg albumin rabbit serum and serotonin produced mild hyperemia and swelling,
while anti-egg albumin rabbit serum alone did not produce any significant lesion.
5. The normal plasma or serum of rabbit with or without serotonin did not produce any significant lesion. It is suggested that serotonin might be involved as a chemical mediator in the pathogenesis of Arthus reaction.
